This just wasn’t Jordan Binnington’s night.

The Blues goalie gave up five goals in barely one and a half periods of play and was benched in favor of Jake Allen with about eight minutes to go in the second period.

This was the first time Binnington has been benched by the Blues in the playoffs.

Binnington has been fantastic in net for St. Louis this season and is a finalist for the Calder Trophy after going 24-5-1 with a .927 save percentage as a rookie.

He hasn’t quite been as good in the playoffs posting a .915 save percentage but he has been good enough to earn some favor to win the Conn Smythe trophy with 13 wins in 21 postseason starts.

But he did struggle Saturday as three of the five goals he allowed were in a four-shot span at the end of the first period. The straw that broke the camels back came on the fifth goal when Torey Krug scored off of a deflection on the power play.

That was the third power-play goal for Boston in this game on their third power-play opportunity.

Boston is now 5 for 13 on the power play this series and while some of that has to do with the Blues’ defense, some of the onus must fall on Binnington, which is why coach Craig Berube probably pulled his first-year goaltender in the second period.
