Amazon Prime’s latest fantasy drama is Carnival Row, which is out later today (Friday, August 30). The series was filmed last year in Eastern Europe, where the fantastical drama’s sets were created. Cara Delevingne, who stars in the series, has also spoken about why she gave her character an Irish accent despite the show not being set in Ireland in the Amazon Prime show.

Where is Carnival Row set?

Carnival Row is set in a fictional city named The Burgue where fantastical creatures and humans meet.

The Victorian-themed city of the show has had a recent influx of non-human refugees after humans have colonised their lands.

If Delevingne and Orlando Bloom’s accents in the show are anything to go by, however, this universe has its own versions of Ireland and the East End of London.

Speaking of the accent her fairy character has in the show, she told the Evening Standard: “She wasn’t actually [written that way].

“The first audition I did I asked to do it in both Irish and English even though it wasn’t asked for in Irish.

“I just always saw it that way. Always. I don’t know what reference it was.

“I learned about fairies; the word fae is Gaelic and I was always pretty sure the mythical thing of fairies was made in Ireland.”

Orlando Bloom said of his accent to StrayFM: “I wanted to find a weighted physicality and vocal quality that would lean into the kind of life he was living.”
